In great style, Guilherme Spinelli, went back to driving the Mitsubishi Lancer Racing in a Special and won the first stage of the 2011 Sertões International Rally, that was a timed stretch of 83 kilometers between Goiânia and Pirenopolis (GO). The three times champion of the Brazilian test had not run with this car since the Dakar in January.

“The Lancer was fantastic in every type of stretch, as always”, he said. “I am readapting to the rhythm. Ever since January I hadn’t driven it.”

Despite the result, the companion of the navigator, Youssef Haddad, has his feet on the ground. “We know that this doesn’t mean anything, that we are going to fight for the rally’s final result. But it was good to start off first tomorrow, with a clean road. We got a lot of dust from Klever [Kolberg] and Marcos [Baumgart]. It was a dusty stretch, of difficult approach. This always increases the risk and the tension a bit”, he stated.

The duo Paulo Nobre/Filipe Palmeiro, also with a quick BMW X3, was the second fastest of the day. Luis Eduardo Stedile/Deco Muniz came in third place.

Spinelli foresees “a longer and more difficult day” this Thursday, when the competitors will go from Pirenópolis to Poragatu (GO). It be a total of 590 kilometers, and 292 of them will be timed.
