Fathers don’t molly-coddle their sons in the Sertões International Rally

There is no time for molly-coddling in the 2011 Sertões International rally. There are fathers in the competition whose job is not only to cheer for their children. In some cases, the relationship between them goes beyond the familiar during the race.

Amable Barrasa is Rafael de Souza Martinez Conde’s father and both of them are truck drivers, but the experienced competitor has more worries in this rally than that of helping his son. Up to now, Amable has not managed to normally complete even one Special in his heavy truck.
The young driver is new to the Sertões International Rally. “He gave me many instructions up until Goiânia”, said Rafael. Then his truck began to have problems and, obviously, he focused on this. But I ask him questions whenever I have any doubts.”

Rafael drives the light truck that up until last year was Amable’s, who now has a heavy. The son has already received a “telling off” from his father: “He got a bit upset because I backed up, bumped into a tree and made a little dent in the truck’s trunk”.

However, Amable, whose engine had piston melting, approves of his son’s performance up to now. “He managed to do something I have not done up to now – dent the trunk, which in five years I never did. But it happens. It’s the excitement. It’s his first Sertões International Rally, and he is doing his job properly”, stated the father.

The Klaumann family counts on three members in the Sertões International Rally: the brothers, Ike and Guto Klaumann, motorbike riders and Sergio Klaumann, father of the two.

Sergio preferred not to run in this rally to be team manager. “This year the group is big, there are four motorbikes. It’s a lot of work [taking care of the time]. So, I decided to give my contribution by being in the support”, he stated.

Ike is in second place in the general classification. “Two other riders came along and he decided to become the team manager. It is important to have an outside ‘head’ to manage everything”, declared the son who, of the family, is in the best position.

Klaumann does not feel that he is stricter because he is the father of two of the riders: “I don’t demand anything more from them than what is right. But I think that being team manager is a lot of work, many details are involved.”

This Sunday the competitors are going from Porto Nacional (TO) to Lizarda (TO) on the first leg of the marathon stage, ending on Monday. The competitions ends on Friday in Caucaia (CE).
