One of the cities that are part of the State Park of Jalapão, Lizarda is receiving a stage of the Rally dos Sertões for the first time. This will be the door leaving Tocantins with destination to the state of Maranhão.
The city was founded in 1824, era in which the immigrants from Piauí settled in the region, specifically on the Fazenda Boa Sorte (good luck farm) in search of water and land for farming and cattle raising.
The old name Boa Sorte was kept until the settlement was raised to the category of a village. Afterwards, the State government changed it to Perotaba, of Indian origin, alleging that the old name had no historical significance. The new name however, was not accepted by the community. Then, finally, the city received its current name, which honors dame Lizarda Maria de Freitas, daughter of the owner of Fazenda Boa Sorte.
Nowadays, the small city has 3,737 inhabitants (according to the IBGE 2008 data) and has an area of almost 6 thousand square kilometers. The climate is tropical, with an average temperature of 27ºC.
