The city, located in the geographical Center of Maranhão and at the confluence of the Corda and Mearim rivers, has 71 thousand inhabitants. The first river contains clear cold waters, while the waters of the latter are greenish and lukewarm.
The word corda in the name, is the Portuguese word for rope, and the river and the city are so named due to the large amount of liana that intertwines on the riverbanks in the shape of rope. The Mearim River becomes totally navigable after the confluence with the Corda.
The citys economy is practically centered on the agro pastoral sector, with a predominance of rice plantations. This city usually surprises the tourist, who comes across a well cared for, organized city with an infra-structure which consists of a good number of banks, hotels and restaurants.
