The 17th edition of the Sertões International Rally started in high
style. On this Thursday glamour evening, the competition started under
the sight of 25 thousand people, with the Super Prime beneficent
race that sets the start grid of the most important off-road event in
Latin America. As in previous years, the promotional start and all the
rally structure were set in front of the Flamboyant Shopping Center,
the most important of the capital of Goiás.

For the 9th time, Goiania was the stage for the rally opening. The
event’s organization has already announced that they plan to receive
the race again in 2010. “We will do anything that the competition
needs to have it always here. This is the recognition we have about a
world-class event that returns approximately 25 times the investment,
not only in media, but also with the heating of the local economy,
that enhances the population’s live quality. Goiás is proud of this
announcement”, said Barbosa Neto, Goiás Turismo president.

This year, the track that was built in front of the Shopping Center is
smaller, but it has jumps and sharp curves, besides the parts that
were watered by the organization in order to make pilots’ lives more
difficult and make a bigger show.

The competition’s first stage after the Super Prime will take place
next Wednesday, between the capital, Goiania, and the city of Santa
Helena, where the competitors will race another Super Prime for the
local audience. This Super Prime is also worth precious minutes in the
general race classification. The initial liaison is 46 km, the special
is 256 km, and the final liaison is 24 km.

In total, Sertões will have 5,056 kilometers, almost half of them
special, timed sections 2,065 km. The rally wil have 190 competitors
that will face the race’s challenges, divided in 128 vehicles.

Super Prime Analysis

The Petrobras Lubrax pair, Jean Azevedo/Youssef Haddad, surprised the
Volkswagen favorites and got the first place in the Super Prime, but
it is still too early to celebrate.

“The Super Prime is too little in such a large context as this
race’s. We expect lots of difficulties along these 5,000 kilometers,
but starting with the right foot is good. “We hope to do our best and
that this yields us a good result. Beating a team like that
(Volkswagen) is motivating, but we will only know how this dispute
work from tomorrow on”, he stated.

The Brazilian pair Maurício Neves/ Eduardo Bampi, that race for
Volkswagen this year, ended up having a little problem during their
lap, they missed a curve and ended up in fourth place.

The first place among trucks went to Amable Barrasa/ Guilherme
Signoretti, with 1min57s05. The time difference to the vice leaders,
the trio Edu Piano/ Davi Fonseca/ Solom Mendes, was just one second.
Third place, with 2min01s02, went to Marcos Pegoraro/ Maria Antonieta/
Rogeverson Luiz.

Pilot Ramon Saciloti was the fastest among the bikes, with 1min31s07.
He started the race beside the only woman competing in bikes category,
his sister, Moara Saciloti. “The track was very good, even being
smaller than last year’s. And the audience here is great. It is very
pleasant to ride here”, said Saciloti.

Cristiano Sousa, present Brazilian champion in 450 cc category, got
the best time with 1min36s in the Super Prime of the 17th Sertões
International Rally, in quads category. “The Super Prime was very
good, the audience is always amazing here. The track was very well
designed, and I could have a little fun before tomorrow’s start”, said
Cristiano. Henrique Klaumann, second place, is very close, only two
seconds behind.
