What seems to be impossible to anybody is a piece of cake for Guido Salvini Netto: to drive a 10-ton truck without brakes. And this was not the only problem that the pilot faced at the special in the first day of Sertões International Rally.
With navigation problems, the pilot, along with Weidner Moreira and Ulysses Marinzeck made the fourth best time of the day: 4h03min18; but they faced problems until Santa Helena (GO). A navigation mistake has compromised us. The next references would check, and we believed it was an error in the road book. We ended up driving 3,5 Km on the wrong way, told Netto.
In trying to fix the mistake, the pilot accelerated as much as he could, and compromised an important structure of the vehicle: breaks. I stepped a little too much on the gas to recover from the mistake, and I abused the brakes. The front brake linings got stuck, and I only had the rear brakes, he remembers.
And if this is not enough, the brakes problem also compromised both cabin shock absorbers. The three competitors stopped, and had to fix the mess.
In the end there were 150 km/h roads, and I was driving that fast, even knowing that I had no brakes. Instead of breaking 300 meters before curves, I had to slow down 500 meters before, and this was bad for us.
Second stage Despite the problems, that seemed serious, the support team will spend the night fixing the truck for next Thursday. Those are simple problems, and we are already replacing everything that is needed to go on the race. I am going to give the navigator a wigging! He will have to sleep over the road book, this way each detail will get into his brains, he joked.
